Teaching Philosophy
“Art is a place for children to learn to trust their ideas, themselves, and explore what is possible.”
-Maryann F. Kohl
My responsibilities as an educator are to provide my students with the knowledge and experience to be successful inside and outside my classroom. All my students will have the ability to learn and it is my obligation to provide equal learning opportunities for each one of them by modifying curriculum to contribute to their learning style. I will guide all my students to their greatest potential by providing a positive learning environment, inspiring creativity and confidence, encouraging critical thinking, problem solving, and having a sense of purpose
For my students, I want to provide an inclusive and safe space where they feel comfortable enough to fully express themselves through their art. Students will have the opportunity to realize their capabilities and what makes them incomparable to others. I want them to be open minded when learning about something new but also feel empowered to ask questions. Students will have the ability to have social interactions with their peers which will help develop their social skills and form meaningful connections with one another. I also want them to look within and be inspired by their personal experiences and use art as a means of communication.
My classroom will focus on inclusivity, working together as a diverse community, as well as learning from one another. Students will be introduced to various artists that share the same background as them. Representation will captivate their interest and lead to enthusiastic learning. Class and group art critiques will be held to give students the space and encouragement to share their ideas and opinions with their classmates. In class, I will provide the students with the foundational skills needed to be successful in creating art, they will then take the lead towards a finished piece of their own.
Lesson plans will include scaffolding to enhance each student's learning and support their comprehension of the instructional objective. Lessons will concentrate on making learning relevant as well as what is appealing to the students. This will allow students to be engaged and have an eagerness to create art pieces with a purpose. For effective learning, collaboration with other educators is required. Introducing curriculum from other classes through art will allow students to further strengthen their understanding. Working together will ensure the students' success and develop lifelong learners.
