Artist Statement
My life as an artist began when I stepped into my middle school Ceramics class. I was so fascinated by the process of the medium and intrigued by the various characteristics glaze had to offer. In high school I took a 3D art class, there I was introduced to different mediums and methods for creating art, this fueled my passion for it even further. There was something so extraordinary about thinking of a concept for a piece and being able to create it three dimensionally. Having the ability to walk around your own work while admiring its final form and feeling a sense of pride really captivated me. I decided to pursue my passion for art and received my bachelors degree in Studio Art at California State University of Long Beach.
I believe art is a form of self expression and communication that is open to the viewers interpretation. Artworks touch individuals differently based on their past experiences, this invites and inspires dialogue and bridges connections. Currently, my works are inspired by my cultural background and identity as well as my personal experiences. When creating my pieces I fully immerse myself in the process and really connect with my work. Feeling engaged with my art also helps me connect in depth with what I want my pieces to communicate to the viewers.
I have focused my creativity on different forms of art, ranging from drawing, painting, sculpture, metal, woodworking, and digital. However, I am very drawn to printmaking, ceramics, and photography. I am fond of how patient you have to be with the process of creating these types of work. I also enjoy the variety of tools and elements you are able to use and incorporate into your pieces. The medium I choose for specific art pieces is based on what I am trying to convey. I have created pieces that depicted my two cultural identities and used two different printmaking methods to show a cohesive and harmonious unity between them. Photography has allowed me to show stills of real life events with the ability to incorporate layers of information to show the importance of the occurrence. Ceramics has opened many pathways to continue expanding my creativity. I have started incorporating printmaking onto foam and transferring that over onto ceramic pieces. Finding a way to join two methods that I am passionate about makes me feel enthusiastic about where my artistic journey is headed. My artistry will carry on to evolve and transform to accomodate my continuous growth in regards to my cultural connection, myself, and the environment I exist in. Regardless of what course I take, I will continue to create art that will inspire others to observe and embrace different perspectives.
